İzmir Elevator Symposium & Exhibition Finished

İzmir Elevator Symposium and Exhibition, having been organized by TMMOB (Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects) Chamber of Mechanical Engineers (MMO) and Chamber of Electrical Engineers (EMO) for the ninth time this year, was held at İzmir Tepekule Congress and Exhibition Hall in between October 18th-20th 2018.

Having been held for the ninth time under the theme of Design & Technology, the 3 days-long activity was attended by nearly one thousand 400 people. In the symposium, having been supported by 13 institutions, 29 declarations were also presented in 10 sessions.

In the exhibition, held concurrently with the symposium, 24 institutions and companies opened booths, and introduced their products and services to the visitors. Symposium began with the concert of MMO Rhythm Band. Proceeded with the opening speeches, Yüksel Yaşartekin, MMO Branch Chairman took the floor the first, and said that: “In our symposium, we, first of all, aim to speak of the technological developments occurring not only in our country, but also worldwide, and to discuss the effects of the legal regulations and standards. We herein would like to put forth the problems being encountered sector-wide throughout the production and post-production processes in relation with more than 800 thousand elevators being operated in our country, as well as to propose solutions thereto”.

Having drawn attention to the importance of engineering in the field of elevator, EMO İzmir Branch Chairman, Şebnem Seçkin Uğurlu, emphasized the impossibility to perform planned, sound, safe, and technological production in compliance with the respective standards, without raising the ratio of engineer labor in the sector. Uğurlu further stated that, “We have got to establish an engineer-oriented sector, keep the track of the technological developments, and concentrate on R&D works in order to become capable of competing with the multinational companies dominating the world market. Our well-educated and qualified labor force in this field is capable of conducting R&D, while developing technologies concurrently”. MMO Board Chairman, Yunus Yener, on the other hand, pointed at the conduct of works for the improvement and development of the elevators within the scope of transmission technologies as being one of the most critical tasks of the Chamber. Yener further stated that, “Our Chamber not only takes part in the periodical elevator controls as an A-type inspection institution, conducting this process with its 278 engineers, who have completed their respectively required trainings and qualification processes, but has also been brought up, and introduced engineers more than the aforesaid number to the sector since the date it has commenced conducting periodical controls. Throughout the controls it conducted, out of the elevators our Chamber controlled, those found inconvenient for use amounted to 79% in 2012, 63.30% in 2013, 52% in 2014, 41% in 2015, 40.2% in 2016, 22.5% in 2017, and 28% for the first 8 months of 2018”.

Having pointed to the imperativeness of the public audit in the field of elevator in his speech, EMO Board Chairman, Gazi İpek further stated that, “Lack of inspection in the fields of engineering leads to jeopardizing the safety of the lives and properties of both the ones who conduct the production of the respective services, and those of the ones who make use of the same services. However, this process has paved the way for incorporations excluding the engineers”.

The final speech of the opening was delivered by TMMOB Board Chairman, Emin Koramaz. Having described the current period being lived through as an era, in which the countries dominating the science and technology also dominated the world, Koramaz emphasized the imperativeness of concentrating on the R&D works and domestic production in parallel with the developments in the field of design and technology. Having spoken also of the economic crisis being encountered by our country, Koramaz further stated that, “Finding the way out of this crisis is possible not by submitting to the demands of the imperialist powers, international monopolies, and to those of the multinational companies, but by implementing a public-oriented concept, which pays regard to the overall interest of the people, and sides with the labor”. After the speeches, chamber and sector representatives altogether cut the opening ribbon. The Symposium Organization Board thereafter toured the exhibition sites, chatted with the attendants, and gained information about the products they displayed.

The first session, titled “Personal Data Protection Law and Harmonization Process Applications in the Elevator Sector”, of the Symposium, organized under the theme of “Design & Technology”, was chaired by AYSAD Chaiman, Sefa Targıt.
